Check Bandwidth

published Last Updated: Oct 9, 2026 HW: all

iPerf (and its newer version, iPerf3) is a network testing tool that measures how much data can flow between two computers - in other words, it measures bandwidth and network performance.

iPerf runs in two parts:

  • Server: Listens for traffic. (iperf.he.net, Other public servers are here)
  • Client: Sends traffic to the server.

Confirm that you have the right interface if multiple are present.

$ iperf3 -c iperf.he.net -B <ip address of interface>
Connecting to host iperf.he.net, port 5201
[ 5] local 192.168.217.28 port 45754 connected to 216.218.207.42 port 5201

[ ID] Interval Transfer Bitrate Retr
[ 5] 0.00-10.00 sec 614 MBytes 515 Mbits/sec 198 sender
[ 5] 0.00-10.02 sec 611 MBytes 511 Mbits/sec receiver

You want sender and receiver to be close to see packet loss.
